In This Issue:

TENTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION!  NOT.

We really honestly believed that we started this rag in 1998, but when we looked back at our archives we discovered that the first issue actually went out in February 1999.  This, then, give or take a month, is our ninth anniversary.

By the time we discovered our mistake we'd already put together a retrospective from past issues, so if you'd like to see some of our fave pieces from the past nine, not ten, years just click the link below.

Cheap Date

Gary's last trip of 2007 took him to Bratislava--yes, it's the capital of Slovakia which used to be part of Czechoslovakia but now it's its own country and The Czech Republic is another country, and Prague is the capital of that one, and yes, Gary went there, too.  Geddit?

Potent Quotables

This quote, we think, brings new meaning to the words, "Behave Yourself."

"As he stood with both hands flat on the bar swaying his big body back and forth and pouring out a stream of abuse, Billy Edwards stepped over and in a twinkling brought both fists down hard on the man's hands--you could almost hear the bones crack!  That was the surprise.

Then, before the brute could realize it, he grabbed him and literally ran him out of the side door--I remember distinctly he pushed the man so hard and so swiftly that he had to run to keep up the pace he had made.  That was 'bouncing' as a fine art."

Taken from a short story by William F. Mulhall in Valentine's Manual of Old New York, 1923.  Mulhall was a bartender at New York's Hoffman House from 1882 until the early 1900s.

Giuseppe Gonzalez of Flatiron Lounge Wins The 2007 Vinos De Jerez Cocktail Competition

Hearty congrats to Giuseppe Gonzalez for his win in the 2007 Sherry Cocktail Competition. And Congrats, too, to the runners up, Jim Meehan, PDT (Please Don't Tell) and Pegu Club, New York City and Don Lee, PDT, New York City.

All three of these guys now get to go to Jerez with Steve Olsen, founding partner in BAR, and Giuseppe and Jim get scholarships to the BAR school, too. Not too shabby, huh? Here's the winning cocktail:

Madrońo (Strawberry Bush) Cobbler
3 oz. Williams & Humbert Dry Sack Medium Amontillado
2 Strawberries.
2 cinnamon sticks
.5 oz Torani Amer
2 barspoons of Rich Demerara Syrup

Lightly muddle one strawberry in Torani Amer. Break cinnamon stick in half into shaker. Add sherry. Shake lightly with a little crushed ice. Serve in wine goblet. Top with more ice. Garnish with fanned strawberry, whole cinnamon stick & straw.
