San Francisco Bartender Injured in Fire

We received e-mail recently (thanks, Jackie) to tell us about Brooke Arthur, a bartender at san Francisco's Range restaurant, who was injured in a fire on New Year's Eve.  According to a web site that was launched to support Brooke, "[She] is currently in the burn unit at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital in SF. There was a fire in her apartment that started late Sunday night, the 31st of December. The amazing firefighters from Station 41 found her on the fire escape."

A fundraiser was held on Monday night at Cantina and according to the Brooke Arthur web site it was a resounding success.  So much so that Brooke's family is no longer asking for donations to help with medical bills.

At the time of writing pictures of the event at Cantina were due to be posted to the web site today, Thursday, Jan 17.

Prayers go out to Brooke and her family for a swift recovery.

Silent Monks Get the Last Word

January 4, 2008

"You gotta see 'Into Great Silence,' " a friend e-mailed me recently, and since this guy has turned me onto some great flicks in the past, I dutifully added his recommendation to my list on Netflix. It arrived in mid-November . . .

LeNell's Cocktail of the Month

Mae West Royal Diamond Fizze West Diamond Champagne Fizz

by LeNell Smothers

I am inspired by many sassy women from our American history.  My own personality beefs up when I read of bawdy chicks like Helen Cromwell who owned a saloon in Milwaukee that ended up being called "Dirty Helen's" due to her foul mouth.  I love reading about larger than life female personalities like Texas Guinan who ran speakeasies in New York during Prohibition.  Then there is that ever-so-sassy film star that rocked the world with her naughtiness...Ms. Mae West . . .

Potent Quotables

Dirty Tom McAlear

“Perhaps the lowest of the Sydney-Town dives were the Boar's Head, where the principal attraction was a sexual exhibition in which a woman and a boar participated; the Goat and Compass and the Golden Rule, both owned by one Hell Haggerty, a ticket-of-leave man from Sydney; and the Fierce Grizzly, so called because a live female bear was kept chained beside the door.  The Goat and Compass was the particular hang-out of a Sydney-Town character known as Dirty Tom McAlear, who for a few cents would eat or drink any sort of refuse offered to him."

Bar Code

Hats and Registers and Bartenders and Free Drinks

Can somebody help us out here?  Our friend Nancy, a woman we know from our days on the Upper East Side in the 70s, wrote recently to ask if we remembered something about everyone at the bar getting a free drink if a bartender passed the register while wearing a hat.  Or does the register wear the hat and everyone at the bar gets to buy the bartender a drink?  We can't remember exactly how this worked.  Best answer gets a Regans' Orange Bitters T-shirt.
