Most of the packages of freebies that arrive on my doorstep are sent by spirits companies, wineries and their various agents. They arrive filled with bottles, the obligatory Bubble Wrap, a press release at the bottom of the box, and occasionally a martini glass or two. The peripheral material is usually discarded immediately, but this wasn't the case last year when a box containing a new cream liqueur turned up . . .

Take a lookie below to see what our buddie
Robert Hess has been up to in
The Cocktail Spirit, a grand series of on-line video thingies. |
The Zombie CocktailIn its many incarnations The Zombie has become an icon of the tropical drink era spawned by Trader Vic and Don the Beach Comber. As Jeff "Beach Bum" Berry and other cocktail historians re-discover these classic recipes and the "tiki" culture takes off again in this new century The Zombie and it's brethren are poised to make a comeback.
The Mai Tai CocktailThe Mai Tai is one of the most well known cocktails from the "Tiki" era... Or is it? Chances are good that if you've ever had a Mai Tai, you haven't had it the way Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron intended it.

We've been poring through our library of late, and we found some pretty great quotations in Harry Johnson's 1900 book,
The New and Improved Illustrated Bartenders’ Manual or How To Mix Drinks of The Present Style.
Here we bring you a couple of our favorites.
What's that you say, Harry?
“A good many people, I am sorry to say, are laboring under the erroneous impression that there is no such thing as a
gentleman in the liquor business."
Well, welly, well, well, Harry. That's simply dreadful. Is there anything you'd like to add about, say, the appearance of the bartender?
“I cannot avoid, very well, offering a few more remarks regarding the conduct and appearance of the bartender, although I have touched upon the subject quite frequently in this book. I wish to impress on the mind of each man behind the bar, that he should look and act as neatly as possible. Bartenders should not, as some have done, have a toothpick in their mouth, clean their fingernails while on duty, smoke, spit on the floor, or have other disgusting habits.”
Spitting Prohibited, huh? Gary was in a band called Spitting Prohibited, you know . . .

At long last, F. Paul Pacult (we call him F for short) has compiled his incredibly detailed spirits reviews, written over the past seven years, and put them all in one big fat book where we can steal from them at will. Thanks, Paul.
If you're serious about your spirits, and if you want to know that your dollars are being well spent when you hit that liquor store, you don't want to be without this baby. It contains descriptions and ratings for over 2,400 spirits, that Dave Wondrich has never bought. Not a one. Zero. Zilch. De Nada.
Click on the book cover above to go to the web site, or click here to buy directly from amazon.
