 Cheap Date: The Eclipse Cocktail

And what, you might be wondering, does the Eclipse Cocktail have in common with a Cheap Date?  Nothing really.  This just seemed like a decent place to put the recipe.

The earliest printed recipe we can find for this drink is in The Savoy Cocktail Book, 1930, by Harry Craddock, and since there was a total eclipse of the sun was witnessed in Britain in 1927, we presume that the drink was created to mark this occasion.

The recipe is fairly simple, but fun--it calls for an olive to be drowned in a sea of grenadine at the bottom of the glass, perhaps signifying the sun being blocked from view.  Or not . . .

Olives and grenadine don’t mix too well, in our opinion, so we’ve opted for a cherry in this version, and rather than using grenadine (unless you have some homemade stuff, of course, we’re suggesting that you substitute PAMA, pomegranate liqueur.  Far better, we think.  Here, then, is our version of the Eclipse:. . .

The Eclipse Cocktail

1 maraschino cherry

3/4 ounce PAMA pomegranate liqueur

1 1/2 ounce gin

1 1/2 ounces sloe gin

1 orange twist, for garnish

Drop the cherry into a chilled cocktail glass and pour the PAMA into the glass.  Stir the gin and sloe gin together over ice, and pour carefully over the PAMA, making sure that the mixture floats on the liqueur.  Add the garnish.

The Original Eclipse Cocktail

For your records, this is how the recipe appeared in the Savor Cocktail Book.

1/3 Dry Gin

2/3 Sloe Gin

Put enough grenadine in a cocktail glass to cover a ripe olive.  Mix the spirits together and pour gently onto the Grenadine so that it does not mix.  Squeeze orange peel on top.

Trivia

A solar eclipse can only occur at new moon when the moon passes between the earth and the sun.

A lunar eclipse can only occur at full moon.

During the solar eclipse of July 11, 1991, Mexico City experienced UFO sightings. According to eyewitnesses, a bright object hovered over the city for almost thirty minutes before, during, and after the eclipse.  Mayan prophecies stated that this eclipse would usher in two life altering events: earth changes and cosmic awareness in the form of encounters with the "Masters of the Stars."

There were eclipses during the same weeks when Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, released, and became President of South Africa.

The first recorded mention of an eclipse came from China, circa 2100 B.C.E.

Next Eclipses

It’s not a bad idea to offer this drink around the time of an actual eclipse, so, if you’d like to know when the next eclipses will take place, go here

 Potent Quotables

"The American bartender of the 'Gay Nineties' was an institution.  His fame spread to the four corners of the globe, and visitors to our shores from the continent bowed before his skill in concocting tempting mixtures of 'liquid lightening'.  He was—and still is—in a class by himself.  We may go to Europe for our chefs, but Europe comes to us for its bartenders."

from Just Cocktails by W. C. Whitfield, 1939.
