Michael Jackson Remembered

The world lost a great man on August 30 when Michael Jackson, the man who almost singlehandedly saved the world's craft brews from extinction, brought single malt scotch to the attention of the planet, and paved the way for all modern-day beer and spirits writers, died of a heart attack at his London home.  He will, indeed, be missed by millions, and his tireless work will not be forgotten.

One of our favorite personal memories of Michael took place at the Beard House, circa 1992, when he was presenting a single-malt pairing dinner that Mardee and Gary attended.  Gracious as ever, Michael introduced Gary, telling the assembled mass that, although Gary was English, he hailed from Lancashire, not Yorkshire.  Michael was a Yorkshire man, and as you probably know, those two counties fought each other in the Wars of the Roses (1455 - 1487).  The battle, albeit good naturedly, continues today.

"Yes, we were the one who won those wars, weren't we, Michael," said smart-ass Gary from his seat.

"Yes you were, Gary" said Michael, "Of course you did have to employ the entire country of Wales to do it . . ." said Michael.

Michael never missed a beat.

God bless you, Michael Jackson.  Save some room for us at that great stretch of mahogany in the sky.  It will be our round.

The White Nectar Cocktail
8/17/07

I've been conducting bartender workshops for almost seven years and I've learned much from the professionals who have taken the time to attend them. My methodology has changed completely, for instance, and I now have a far better understanding of how to mix and match ingredients than I did when I kicked off the program in 2001. It's been a very interesting journey . . .

*It looks as though there are way more than 200 recipes in this book, but that's because each recipe is posted a few times under the chapter for each ingredient used in the drink.  So, if a recipe calls for bourbon and two liqueurs, for instance, it gets posted three times.  We count 215 original recipes.
